The foundation of good preventive care is regular contact with a general practitioner, who as part of an annual overall preventive check-up will also assess the client's family and personal history relating to cancer and individual lifestyle risk factors. These especially include smoking, excessive alcohol intake, obesity, and insufficient dietary fibre, as well as work-related exposure to harmful substances.

Based on the results, your doctor will then recommend a schedule for regular screenings. Their purpose is to detect early, and therefore treatable stages of the most common types of cancer. These screenings include:

"The use of other “oncomarkers” is of limited utility in cancer prevention and one must be very careful when interpreting them. These substances are not entirely organ-specific, and their values can be normal even in the case of cancer, hence giving the client a false sense of security and delay proper and timely diagnosis," explains Dr. Krejčí.

At My Clinic we not only recommend which examinations clients should undergo and at what intervals, but our health coordinators will also make the appointments to fit the client's schedule and will provide all necessary instructions.

Doctors and any other My Clinic specialists can also discuss in detail possible changes in the client's lifestyle for better cancer prevention. This may involve dietary recommendations, help normalizing body weight, as well as specialized help in quitting smoking or alcohol abuse treatment. "Up to a third of cancers can be avoided through lifestyle changes!" says Dr. Kateřina Krejčí.

Finally, in the case of any suspicious changes in their health, the client should contact a doctor they trust and who knows them "in health" along with their entire history. "Any lump that doesn't go away or enlarged node, a lesion inside the mouth or on the skin that won't heal, a persistent cough, unwanted weight loss, or persistent stomach pain or the presence of blood in the stool... All these can be signs of cancer, and the client shouldn't put off visiting a doctor unnecessarily. At My Clinic we consider timely availability of care and an individual approach to clients to be important and are able to address every problem in time and with the appropriate attention," she says in closing.

And finally, we would like to convey the wishes of the head of the general and internal medicine department at My Clinic, Dr. Kateřina Krejčí, whom we would like to thank for her contribution regarding cancer prevention.

"I would like to wish our clients a good relationship with their body, determination in caring for their health, and a doctor they trust."
