Sclerotherapy is a quick, injection-based therapy for small varices and spider veins that does not require time off from work. Once the active substance enters the vein, it destroys the inner lining of the blood vessel and disrupts the connective collagenous tissue of the vein wall, causing the walls to stick together; eventually, the varicose vein will close and be absorbed.
For the most delicate spider veins, the active substance is applied in the form of a solution; larger veins are treated with a special foam designed to remain in place for longer and to close off the vein more efficiently than a liquid.
After the procedure, we recommend wearing compression stockings around the clock for the first four days, and during the day for ten days thereafter. The patient’s day-to-day routine is not affected by any major restrictions – on the contrary, it is advisable to follow a reasonable regime of physical activity (i.e., walking). For the first 14 days or so after the intervention, we recommend refraining from strenuous sports; likewise, prolonged standing in one position is to be avoided. The sclerotized spider veins will benefit from the application of an ointment that accelerates the absorption process, and from preventing direct exposure to sunlight (which may trigger pigmentation spots).
