Since 1988, the European University Professors of Ophthalmology (EUPO) has been organizing ophthalmology courses for European residents (physicians without specialized competence) who are undergoing specialization training concluded with a European Board of Ophthalmology Diploma Examination.

EUPO courses reflect professional experience from Eye University Hospitals in European regions. This allows residents to get a balanced overview of theoretical knowledge in all subspecialties of ophthalmology during their residency period, including new diagnostic and treatment modalities.

The syllabus corresponds to the recommended topics in the European Board of Ophthalmology Diploma Examination, which if passed successfully results in the physician being granted a European Ophthalmology Certificate.
